YouTube is expanding access to its AI-powered likeness detection tool to all users over the age of 18. Previously, the feature was limited to select groups, including members of its Partner Program, politicians, journalists, and celebrities. The tool is designed to combat the rise of unauthorized AI-generated videos and deepfakes by allowing individuals to find and request the removal of content that simulates their facial likeness without permission.

To enroll, users must go through a verification process in YouTube Studio, which includes submitting a government ID and a selfie video. Once enrolled, the system scans for facial matches in newly uploaded videos and alerts the user. Users can then submit a removal request, which YouTube evaluates based on its privacy guidelines, with exceptions for parody and satire. The tool currently only detects facial likeness, with plans to include audio detection in the future.
