Google updated its spam policy in Europe to address regulator concerns and avoid potential antitrust penalties. The tech giant faced scrutiny after publishers claimed the site reputation abuse policy unfairly demoted websites hosting commercial partner content.

The updated policy removes manual demotions for users within the European Economic Area starting August 30. This change follows an investigation by the European Commission under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The DMA allows the Commission to levy fines of up to 10% of a company's global annual turnover for breaches. Regulators confirmed they will monitor the application of the new policy.
