IonQ shares rose as much as 8% in after-hours trading Tuesday following a breakthrough in fault-tolerant quantum computing. The company announced the industry's first real-time quantum error correction decoder that runs on a single standard CPU.

This technology identifies and fixes errors in sensitive quantum bits without pausing the computer. IonQ’s decoder managed over 31.5 million quantum operations in a simulation with minimal processing delay.

The development addresses a major industry bottleneck by allowing for continuous error correction. This milestone marks a key step toward producing scalable and commercially viable quantum computers.
