The U.S. Food and Drug Administration accepted two applications from Sandoz for generic versions of Eli Lilly’s GLP-1 drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound. Both brand-name medications utilize the active ingredient tirzepatide to treat type 2 diabetes and weight management.

Sandoz confirmed the submission on Monday. The company stated its in-house developed products could be among the first generic tirzepatide options available in the U.S. market.

Approval would introduce lower-cost alternatives to Lilly’s blockbuster treatments. These generics would compete directly in the rapidly expanding weight-loss drug sector. The FDA has not yet established a specific timeline for the review process.
