Meta launched a legal challenge against UK regulator Ofcom regarding the Online Safety Act. The company disputes the categorization of WhatsApp and Instagram under the new framework.

This classification subjects the platforms to extra duties, including measures against fraudulent ads and enhanced reporting of illegal content. Meta argues these top-tier obligations are not appropriate for private and small-group messaging services.

UK officials describe the action as a strategy to delay the implementation of the safety law. Gaming platform Roblox and Q&A site Quora also filed formal challenges against Ofcom’s categorization of their services.
