Meta’s Oversight Board has ordered the company to overhaul its AI-generated content policies, labeling current rules consistently and fundamentally inadequate. The board overturned Meta’s previous decisions in two deepfake cases involving a young Muslim woman and a Scottish politician.

The ruling mandates the immediate removal of these videos and issues nine specific policy recommendations. These proposals include expanding user protections, improving AI labeling, and increasing penalties for deepfake harassment.

Meta must comply with the case-specific removals immediately. The company has 60 days to provide a public response to the broader policy recommendations.
