Meta Platforms began a federal trial today in Oakland, California. A coalition of states including California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey brought the lawsuit.
The suit alleges Meta knowingly designed Facebook and Instagram features to be addictive to children. The states claim the company misled the public about the safety of its products.
This case represents the most significant legal challenge regarding Meta's impact on youth mental health. Financial penalties could reach a maximum of $1.4 trillion. The states also seek court-ordered changes to Meta's platform designs.
The trial will last seven weeks. CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify during the proceedings.
