India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) ordered Meta Platforms Inc. to remove all Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) from Instagram. The directive followed a BBC report alleging that Meta's algorithms promoted the exploitative content.
The ministry issued the formal notice on the evening of July 4, 2026. Meta has seven days to provide a detailed explanation and implement corrective actions against algorithmic amplification.
The order intensifies regulatory pressure on the tech giant within a primary growth market. Neither Meta nor the Indian ministry has provided an immediate public comment regarding the notice.
