A Santa Fe jury found on Friday that Meta Platforms misled New Mexico residents regarding data privacy and content moderation. The verdict stems from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where the firm harvested personal data from millions of Facebook users for voter profiling.
New Mexico’s attorney general alleged that CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Meta falsely claimed users maintained control over their personal information. The lawsuit further charged that the company failed to uniformly enforce its stated content policies.
New Mexico was the only state to take Meta to trial after a multi-state settlement released the company from similar liability elsewhere. A judge will now determine the specific monetary penalties Meta faces for these violations.
