The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has released its list of applications for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), the first such release since 2012. The round drew 1,615 applications from 481 entities. Artificial intelligence featured prominently among the applications.
Meta, OpenAI and Alphabet, Google's parent company, are among multiple applicants for the highly sought-after .agent domain. The companies also applied for numerous brand-specific domains, including .meta, .threads, .openai, .chatgpt, .gemini and .deepmind, in a bid to control digital branding in the AI era.
