The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) released a report titled Safety Off regarding Meta's content moderation. The study analyzed nearly 8 million Facebook comments directed at 100 members of Congress. Researchers examined data from the six months before and after Meta's January 2025 policy changes.
Violent threats against U.S. lawmakers quadrupled following the relaxation of moderation rules. Overall online abuse, including hate and harassment, tripled during the period studied. Threats targeting President Donald J. Trump doubled according to the research.
The CCDH report links the surge in harmful content to Meta's reduced enforcement. These findings raise concerns over the safety of public officials and the consequences of policy shifts on the platform.
