Meta Platforms plans to begin manufacturing its own artificial intelligence chip, codenamed "Iris," in September, according to an internal memo. This move is a key part of the company's strategy to reduce its dependence on third-party chip suppliers such as Nvidia and AMD and to gain more control over its AI infrastructure development.
The "Iris" chip is part of Meta's Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) project and is designed in-house to power AI features on its platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The company also has ambitious plans to significantly scale its computing power, aiming to double its capacity from 7 gigawatts this year to 14 gigawatts in 2027 to support its long-term AI and metaverse goals.
