Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer submitted a victim impact statement in the federal fraud case of Joseph Sanberg. Sanberg co-founded the fintech firm Aspiration, which is now bankrupt.

Ballmer claims he lost his entire $60 million investment in the company. He made the investment because of the firm's purported commitment to environmental sustainability.

Sanberg pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud. He entered the plea in October 2025.

Prosecutors say the scheme defrauded investors and lenders of more than $248 million. Sanberg misrepresented Aspiration's financial health to deceive stakeholders.

Ballmer filed his letter ahead of the sentencing scheduled for April 27, 2026. He argues the ordeal caused immeasurable damage to his reputation.

The case has drawn scrutiny from the NBA. This involves Aspiration’s sponsorship deals with Ballmer’s Los Angeles Clippers.
