Boko Haram is systematically using major AI chatbots to plan attacks and design explosives. The Cambridge Programme on AI Science & Policy based its research on interviews with 27 former members in Nigeria.

Findings indicate a faster and more extensive adoption of AI for operational purposes than previously understood. Former members reported using OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and Meta AI.

Foreign Islamic State-linked operatives provided in-person training to the group. Chatbots assisted with battlefield tactics and modifying motorcycles for attacks. The study concludes that current safeguards failed to prevent organized terrorist misuse.
