Chinese AI startup DeepSeek launched preview versions of its flagship V4 Pro and V4 Flash models. The company positions these releases as open-source alternatives to proprietary models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

The V4 Pro model utilizes 1.6 trillion parameters. The V4 Flash version features 284 billion parameters to prioritize efficiency.

DeepSeek claims the V4 Pro achieves top-tier performance in coding benchmarks. The company states its models are competitive with OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 in reasoning tasks. Performance remains slightly behind Google’s Gemini-3.1-Pro. The models also trail Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6.

This launch follows a release from one year ago that offered comparable performance to rivals at a fraction of the cost.
