Microsoft has officially confirmed that its AI assistant, Copilot, will be removed from WhatsApp starting January 15. The decision complies with newly revised platform policies from the Meta-owned messaging service, which now prohibit the operation of general-purpose AI chatbots through the WhatsApp Business API. This policy shift affects other AI providers as well, with OpenAI having previously announced a similar withdrawal of its WhatsApp integration. The removal underscores the challenges AI companies face in relying on third-party ecosystems for distribution as platform owners refine their rules. Microsoft has advised users that they will need to switch to the dedicated Copilot mobile apps or the web-based version to continue using the service. The company also cautioned that chat histories from the WhatsApp integration will not be preserved or transferred, as the access was unauthenticated.
