Microsoft’s threat intelligence unit revealed that state-backed North Korean IT workers are using artificial intelligence to secure remote employment at Western companies. These operatives utilize AI-generated identities and voice-changing software to pass interviews for IT and software development roles.
The scheme is designed to generate revenue for the North Korean regime. AI tools enable these workers to create more convincing fake profiles and overcome language or accent barriers during the hiring process.
Once employed, these workers funnel their wages back to the North Korean government. Microsoft is actively disrupting these operations, which represent an advanced method for nation-states to conduct illicit financial activities.
