OpenAI is acquiring Astral, the startup behind popular Python tools Ruff and uv. OpenAI did not disclose the financial terms of the deal. The transaction awaits regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.
The Astral team will join OpenAI’s Codex division. This move aims to expand the AI coding assistant’s capabilities across the software development lifecycle. OpenAI will continue to support Astral’s open-source products.
The Codex platform now has over 2 million weekly active users. This figure reflects a threefold increase in users since the start of the year. Platform usage has grown fivefold during the same period.
