OpenAI acquired voice-replication startup Weights.gg earlier this year, according to The New York Times. The deal includes the company’s team and intellectual property. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Weights.gg previously raised approximately $4 million from investors. The startup ceased operations and shut down its platform on April 1, 2026.
Before the acquisition, Weights.gg operated a social platform for creating AI-generated celebrity voice models. OpenAI does not plan to launch a public-facing voice-cloning product.
OpenAI integrated the Weights.gg team into internal departments to enhance infrastructure. This alignment supports the company’s broader investment in voice-based AI experiences.
