The European Commission is holding separate discussions with OpenAI and Anthropic to secure access to their latest artificial intelligence models. OpenAI proactively offered the EU access to its newest model, and the Commission is currently evaluating next steps.
Talks with Anthropic are ongoing following four or five initial meetings. These discussions have not yet reached the stage of negotiating direct access to Anthropic's models.
The engagement aligns with the EU AI Act, which introduces new obligations for general-purpose AI models beginning August 2026. The Commission aims to establish greater transparency and oversight for advanced AI systems.
