Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier launched an investigation into OpenAI and its ChatGPT chatbot. The probe examines whether foreign adversaries like China can access the company’s data and technology. Uthmeier identified this potential access as a national security risk.
The Attorney General’s office will issue subpoenas to OpenAI shortly. This investigation follows reports that the gunman in the 2025 Florida State University mass shooting used ChatGPT to plan the attack. That shooting resulted in two deaths.
Uthmeier noted that ChatGPT has been linked to other criminal behaviors. This action aligns with increasing scrutiny from state and federal regulators regarding generative AI safety and privacy.
