OpenAI released a unified ChatGPT desktop application for Mac and Windows. This software integrates the ChatGPT conversational AI with the Codex coding assistant.
The application features three distinct modes: Chat, Codex, and ChatGPT Work. The ChatGPT Work agent handles document creation, information analysis, and complex project management.
This consolidation creates a single super app for integrated knowledge work and autonomous tasks. Existing Codex users will receive the update automatically. Current ChatGPT desktop users must download the new version.
The launch coincides with the public rollout of OpenAI's new GPT-5.6 models.
