OpenAI is scaling back its e-commerce ambitions for ChatGPT, shelving plans that allowed users to purchase products directly within the chatbot interface. [1, 3] The feature, called Instant Checkout and introduced in September, will be discontinued. Instead, users who discover products through the chatbot will be redirected to third-party merchant apps or websites to complete their transactions. [8, 10]

The strategy shift follows challenges with the in-app shopping model. OpenAI found that while users were leveraging ChatGPT for product research and discovery, very few were completing purchases directly within the chat. [1, 12] The company also faced technical hurdles, including difficulties with synchronizing real-time product data and concerns over fraud prevention, which complicated the effort to operate a full-scale e-commerce platform.
