The Bank of Ghana suspended a new 0.75% fee on MTN Ghana’s wallet-to-bank transfers. This order arrived less than 24 hours after Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MMFL) announced the charge on May 25. The fee was originally scheduled to begin on June 1, 2026.

Regulators halted the move to conduct stakeholder consultations focused on fairness and consumer protection. The proposal triggered immediate backlash from public and political circles. Opponents likened the charge to the unpopular E-Levy tax, which was repealed in 2025.

Consumer rights organization CUTS International accused MMFL of abusing its dominant market position. The group specifically cited the short notice given to the public. The fee's implementation remains uncertain pending a full regulatory review.
