Nvidia is in early-stage talks to acquire U.S. open-weights AI startup Reflection AI or increase its investment, according to people familiar with the matter. The structure of a potential deal remains undecided. It could take the form of an acqui-hire, potentially avoiding the extensive regulatory scrutiny of a full acquisition.

Nvidia has already invested $800 million in Reflection AI. The startup was last valued at $25 billion in a funding round in March.

The discussions align with Nvidia’s goal of fostering an open-weight AI ecosystem. The administration hopes Reflection AI will become a U.S.-based rival to Chinese alternatives.
