The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved Novo Nordisk’s daily oral version of its weight-loss drug, Wegovy. This authorization makes the UK the first European nation to approve the pill-based semaglutide treatment.
The oral medication offers a needle-free alternative for adults with obesity or weight-related health conditions. Clinical trials demonstrated that patients using the pill achieved significant weight loss compared to a placebo group.
Novo Nordisk plans to launch the Wegovy pill through private prescriptions within weeks. The National Health Service (NHS) has yet to complete its assessment for public funding.
