Roblox announced it will implement mandatory facial age estimation or identity verification for users to access chat features, a move aimed at enhancing child safety. The system will sort users into six age brackets to limit communication between minors and adults, addressing growing scrutiny and lawsuits over the platform's safety protocols. The new requirement is set to roll out in select countries, including Australia and New Zealand, in early December 2025, with a global expansion planned for January 2026. Users who opt out of the verification process will not be able to use many of the platform's communication features. Roblox stated this makes it the first major gaming platform to require such checks for chat access. Following the announcement, Roblox shares saw a notable decline. One report highlighted a 6.2% drop in the stock price during early trading on November 19, 2025, indicating a direct market reaction to the new safety measures. The change comes as the company faces lawsuits from several states regarding alleged failures in protecting children on the platform.
