Roblox has begun implementing a new age assurance system to bolster safety for its predominantly young user base. The update introduces voluntary facial age estimation and ID checks to verify user ages, a feature set to become mandatory in some regions starting in December. Once verified, users will be placed into specific age brackets (e.g., under 9, 9-12, 13-15) to ensure they can only chat with peers in similar or the same age group. This initiative is a direct response to mounting pressure from regulators and a series of lawsuits from states like Texas, Louisiana, and Kentucky, which alleged the platform was not doing enough to protect children from predators. By segmenting users by age, Roblox aims to create more age-appropriate experiences and limit interactions between minors and unknown adults, addressing long-standing safety criticisms. The initial rollout of these features will start in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands.
