California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation for a new electric vehicle incentive program. The program addresses slowing sales. It provides a $3,500 point-of-sale rebate. This rebate targets first-time buyers of new zero-emission vehicles. Vehicles must have a retail price of $50,000 or less.

The program responds to the elimination of the federal EV tax credit. This elimination contributed to a sharp decline in state EV registrations. Tesla, the dominant EV seller in California, is positioned to benefit. The incentive is expected to stimulate demand for its qualifying Model 3 and Model Y configurations.
