A Tesla Model 3 crashed through a home in Katy, Texas, on Friday evening.

The 76-year-old victim, Martha Avila, died at a hospital after the vehicle struck her in her front room.

The 44-year-old driver told Harris County Sheriff's Office investigators that Autopilot was active during the high-speed crash. He claimed the system failed to navigate a turn before leaving the roadway.

Authorities report the driver showed no signs of intoxication and is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed as of yet.

Investigators are examining vehicle data to confirm if Autopilot was active during the incident. This crash intensifies existing scrutiny regarding the safety of Tesla’s driver-assistance technology.
