Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick unveiled Atoms, a robotics and artificial intelligence company following eight years in stealth. The venture rebrands his existing firm, City Storage Systems.

Atoms focuses on specialized industrial robots for food service, mining, and transportation. The company avoids developing general-purpose humanoid robots.

Atoms will absorb CloudKitchens, Kalanick’s multi-billion dollar ghost kitchen business, as its food division. The firm is nearing a deal to acquire autonomous vehicle startup Pronto.

Uber is reportedly considering providing major financial backing to the venture. Kalanick was previously ousted from Uber in 2017.
