Industrial robotics and AI startup Atoms raised $1.7 billion in a new funding round. Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) led the investment, and partner Ben Horowitz will join the company's board. Uber also participated in the round for the firm founded by its co-founder, Travis Kalanick.
Atoms operated in stealth for eight years under the names City Storage Systems and CloudKitchens. The company develops specialized robots and AI for food production, transportation, and mining. It aims to automate physical sectors of the economy that software alone cannot reach.
