The Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations certified the App Drivers Union (ADU) as the first state-recognized rideshare union in the United States.

The union represents approximately 70,000 drivers for platforms including Uber and Lyft. The SEIU and the International Association of Machinists back the new organization.

This certification follows a 2024 ballot measure granting Massachusetts rideshare drivers the right to unionize. The ADU secured recognition with support from 32% of active drivers. This figure exceeds the 25% support threshold required by state law.

Both parties have six months to negotiate a labor contract. State-supervised mediation will trigger if they fail to reach an agreement within that timeframe.
