Autonomous vehicle startup Nuro has commenced testing its self-driving technology on public roads in Tokyo. This deployment represents the company’s first operational expansion outside of the United States. The initiative integrates Nuro’s autonomous systems into conventional vehicles featuring on-site safety operators.

The move capitalizes on Japan’s supportive regulatory environment and the country's critical driver shortage. Testing will provide data on navigating Tokyo’s complex infrastructure, including left-hand traffic and narrow streets.

Nuro utilizes a zero-shot autonomy approach that leverages general driving principles rather than extensive local pre-training. The startup is backed by major investors including Uber and Nvidia. This expansion aims to develop a universally adaptable driving system for future global partner deployments.
