Uber, Nissan, and UK-based AI startup Wayve have signed a memorandum of understanding to launch a robotaxi service in Tokyo. This partnership marks Uber’s first autonomous vehicle initiative in Japan.

The companies scheduled the pilot program to begin in late 2026. The service will utilize Nissan Leaf electric vehicles equipped with Wayve’s AI-powered autonomous driving technology.

Passengers will book the robotaxis through the Uber app. A trained safety driver will remain present in each vehicle during the initial phase of operations.

The Tokyo initiative belongs to a broader strategy by Uber and Wayve to launch robotaxi services in more than 10 cities globally. The expansion plan includes a future rollout in London.
