Uber Technologies signed an operational partnership agreement with Japanese taxi operator Hinomaru Kotsu. This agreement supports Uber's robotaxi pilot in Tokyo. The pilot is scheduled to launch in late 2026.
Hinomaru Kotsu will manage day-to-day fleet and depot operations. These operations include vehicle maintenance, cleaning, and charging.
The agreement solidifies a March 2026 memorandum of understanding. This MoU involved Uber, Nissan, and AI-driving technology company Wayve.
The pilot will use Nissan LEAF vehicles equipped with Wayve's AI Driver technology.
Initially, vehicles will operate with a human safety driver from Hinomaru Kotsu. This complies with Japanese regulations. The long-term goal is fully driverless operation, pending regulatory approval.
