Uber Chief Operating Officer Andrew Macdonald indicated the company could have fewer employees in five years due to the increasing role of artificial intelligence. On a podcast, Macdonald identified operational areas like customer support, sales, and analytics as prime candidates for AI augmentation, potentially leading to a reduced headcount.

Macdonald noted this outcome is not certain. Historically, efficiency gains from AI have led to organizational growth in new areas rather than net job cuts. His comments follow May remarks where he highlighted the difficulty in quantifying direct financial and productivity returns from AI investments. In July, Uber reduced its community operations team by about 10%. The company cited a pivot toward AI integration.
