Surveillance technology company Flock Safety revealed a plan. It aimed to turn approximately 350,000 Uber, Lyft, and delivery drivers into a mobile surveillance network. The proposal involved a partnership with dashcam company Nexar. Nexar's devices would collect license plate data from rideshare vehicles for Flock's network.
Flock pitched the presentation to potential customers, including the Georgia Attorney General's office. The presentation outlined a significant expansion of Flock's data collection capabilities beyond its stationary cameras. Reports do not clarify whether Uber or its drivers would have been aware of the data collection.
Flock stated it never executed the partnership with Nexar. Despite the plan not being implemented, the news raises privacy and reputational concerns for Uber. Uber has not issued a public comment on the matter.
