Apple Inc. held preliminary talks with Intel Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. regarding U.S.-based processor manufacturing. Discussions involved Intel’s foundry services and executive visits to Samsung’s upcoming Texas facility. This move targets a reduction in Apple's reliance on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).
Apple has exclusively used TSMC for its advanced iPhone, iPad, and Mac processors for over a decade. The company aims to de-risk its supply chain against geopolitical tensions by increasing its U.S. manufacturing footprint. Although no orders are finalized, the consideration of non-TSMC technology marks a significant strategic shift.
A partnership would validate Intel’s foundry business and Samsung’s advanced semiconductor competition against TSMC. The move aligns with U.S. government efforts to onshore advanced chip production.
