Global technology firms are aggressively courting South Korea’s SK Hynix with offers to fund production lines and manufacturing equipment. A May 8 Reuters report indicates these proposals respond to a severe global scarcity of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips essential for generative AI.
Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet are reportedly offering to finance multi-million-dollar lithography machines or dedicated production lines to guarantee supply. These companies recently announced plans to increase capital expenditures on AI infrastructure to meet surging demand.
SK Hynix serves as the primary HBM supplier for NVIDIA and has seen its market value rise significantly. The company remains cautious about accepting deals that could tie it to specific buyers at lower prices. Available production capacity for these advanced chips is currently sold out.
