SoftBank Group’s mobile unit will launch large-scale battery cell manufacturing to address the escalating power demands of artificial intelligence. The company partnered with South Korea’s Cosmos Lab and DeltaX to build the facility at its Sakai plant in Osaka. Mass production is scheduled to begin in the fiscal year starting April 2027.
The factory aims to produce energy storage systems at a scale of one gigawatt-hour (GWh) per year. This capacity will establish the site as one of the largest battery facilities in Japan.
SoftBank will deploy the batteries to power its developing AI data centers while supplying units for grid and industrial use. This strategic investment supports the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, a primary driver for the technology and semiconductor sectors.
