The U.S. Space Force is launching the Ground Based Radar Digitization (GBRD) program to overhaul eight legacy systems. This initiative replaces aging analog components with modern digital technology for both antennas and back-end processors.

The Pentagon allocated $1.98 billion in the fiscal 2026 budget reconciliation for these missile defense improvements. The modernization aims to detect smaller, faster threats while reducing long-term sustainment costs.

Space Force expects initial operational capability at four prototype sites by early 2030. All eight sites will be fully upgraded by mid-2031, creating a multi-year window for defense contractors.
