Nineteen additional Brazilian municipalities joined a compensation agreement with Vale, BHP, and their joint venture Samarco. This group includes Mariana, the epicenter of the 2015 tailings dam disaster.
Total participation now includes 45 out of 49 eligible cities. The 2024 agreement outlines approximately $32.7 billion in reparations. This total is equivalent to 170 billion reais.
Some cities previously delayed joining due to concerns over funding levels and a parallel lawsuit against BHP in London. This progress reduces long-standing legal and financial uncertainty for both mining companies.
