Citigroup announced on August 18, 2026, it will launch a Bitcoin custody service for institutional clients later this year. The fourth-largest U.S. bank will integrate this service into Custody+, its new modular platform. This framework allows clients to manage traditional and crypto assets simultaneously.

The initiative builds direct infrastructure for digital assets instead of relying on third-party products or ETFs. Citi joins BNY Mellon and State Street in providing native Bitcoin custody. The service addresses rising institutional demand for regulated access to the cryptocurrency market.

Citigroup now competes directly with established financial custodians and specialized digital asset firms. The bank uses its integrated approach as a primary differentiator. Institutions can allocate portfolios to Bitcoin while maintaining existing banking relationships.
