TSMC and Sony Group are planning a ¥1 trillion ($6.4 billion) joint investment. The partners will construct a new factory for next-generation image sensors in Kumamoto, Japan. This facility will be located near TSMC’s existing plant.
Sony will hold a majority stake in the joint venture. TSMC will maintain a significant minority share. Production begins as early as 2029.
The plant will manufacture advanced sensors for artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous vehicles. Both companies are currently negotiating with the Japanese government for project subsidies.
