Toyota Motor Corp. is closing the gap with General Motors for the top spot in U.S. auto sales.

Cox Automotive forecasts Toyota will capture a 15.8% market share in the first half of the year. General Motors’ market share is expected to decline to 16.8% during the same period.

Surging demand for gasoline-electric hybrids provides Toyota a competitive advantage over GM. Toyota recently began production of the hybrid-only RAV4 at its Kentucky plant to increase domestic output.
