Toyota is recalling more than 16,000 electric vehicles from the 2026 model year. The safety recall affects both the Toyota bZ4X and the Lexus RZ.
A software error in the battery ECU can trigger a complete drive system shutdown while the vehicle is in motion. Although power steering and braking remain functional, the loss of motive power increases the risk of a collision.
Dealers will perform a free software update to the battery ECU to resolve the defect. Toyota expects to notify affected owners by mid-August 2026.
