Apple has notified the European Commission that its Apple Maps and Apple Ads services meet the thresholds to be considered under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The commission now has 45 working days to decide whether to designate these services, which would subject them to stricter competition rules, a process that could intensify regulatory pressure on the company in Europe. If designated, Apple would have six months to comply with the new requirements. Apple is contesting the potential "gatekeeper" label, arguing that both services have a limited market share in the EU compared to dominant competitors like Google. The company stated that Apple Maps has minimal usage compared to Google Maps and Waze, while its advertising business is a small player against rivals such as Google, Meta, and TikTok. This development follows the existing gatekeeper designation for Apple's iOS, iPadOS, and the App Store, which has already forced significant operational changes in the EU.
