Apple is developing a new low-cost MacBook, according to industry reports and leaks dated January 5, 2026. The device is potentially set for release in the first half of the year. This initiative aims to lower the entry barrier to the macOS ecosystem.

The new model will compete directly with Chromebooks and budget Windows laptops. If released, this marks Apple’s first significant push into the sub-$1,000 MacBook category in years.

Leaks suggest the budget-friendly MacBook will feature a display close to 13 inches. To manage costs, the device may utilize an iPhone-grade A-series chip, such as the A18 Pro.

Apple may reintroduce plastic elements in the chassis and offer brighter colors, similar to the iMac lineup, to further reduce expenses and differentiate the product from the premium Air and Pro lines. Sources suggest the device will be positioned well below the current $999 starting price of the MacBook Air.
