A group of Democratic U.S. senators, including Ron Wyden, Edward Markey, and Ben Ray Luján, has formally urged Apple and Google to remove X and its integrated AI chatbot, Grok, from their respective app stores. The lawmakers contend that the apps are in violation of the platforms' terms of service due to Grok's use in generating nonconsensual, sexualized deepfake images of women and children.
The letter argues that allowing the apps to remain available makes a "mockery" of the app stores' content moderation policies. This move is part of a wider backlash against X's AI tool, which also includes a recently announced investigation by California's Attorney General into xAI, the parent company of Grok, regarding the creation and spread of explicit deepfakes.
